ABOUT THE ARTWORK
I’m always inspired by the music that flows through our valleys, so I was immediately drawn to the two records that were rescued from the flood debris in the River Arts District. I’ve left the mud on the records as a reminder that they are hurricane survivors, and one is showing even worse wear after I tried to flatten out the warp in my oven (not recommended). I’ve paired the two records with prints that were both already in progress before the hurricane even hit, but seem poignant and relevant to this particular work.
“Speak No Evil” is a reinterpretation of the Buddhist philosophy that's usually seen paired with monkeys covering their faces, as guidance to avoid evil in order to live a pure life. Instead of avoiding evil, in this print I protect from evil using what I’m capable of and what I have; in this case, protecting wolves with hand crafted knits. Will this be enough to protect us from evil?
“Deeper Roots” came out of an exploration of sunsets and sunrises I see every day in the Swannanoa Valley. I once found a small willow sapling growing out of the gutter of my carport and I transplanted it in the backyard by the stream. Knowing that willows love to be near water and will drain it from saturated land, I watch the willow grow. One day, it will be a climbing tree for the neighborhood kids and a respite for the bears, deer, and groundhogs that travel along the stream.
