ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Malorkus Fairybanks stands atop a pile of toxic mud that overflowed from the French Broad River during Hurricane Helene in Asheville, NC. In the Professor Wunderbar saga, Fairbanks travels through suitcase portals and offers up his magic wings when all seems hopeless. Here on a broken suitcase, he can’t escape through the damaged portal and must deal with the aftermath.
A reluctant stand-in for the mythical Phoenix, he accepts his situation and the discomfort and skin irritation it comes with. An unlikely hero, he will rise from the devastation stronger than ever and inspire others to find strength within the ruin.
103 is the number of confirmed deaths from Hurricane Helene as of 11/19/2024 in North Carolina.
